Luis Gordillo
Maior Gallery - Pollença
19 July-August 2014

Born in Seville in 1934, Luis Gordillo has become the artistic reference of the Spanish pictorial creation of the latest decades, and his particular and unique style, has in some way or another, influenced the work of many artists belonging to later generations. In the Galeria Maior exhibition we can see his most recent paintings and photographs artworks.

After graduating  from  Law School , Gordillo started his artistic studies at the Sevillan Faculty of Fine Arts. In the course of his career he has been assimilating the new creative languages of the last five decades, in a personal manner. In 1958, living in Paris he got in closer touch with Informalism and later on with Pop Art, which offered him new and important forms of plastic expression. The configuration of his own personal set of aesthetics is accompanied in a parallel manner, by his yearning to create new discourses based on his interest in psychoanalysis, cinematography, and music.

His artistic career, marked by the continuous experimentation, and the ever changing use of materials in his production, has been defined as abstraction, a definition which confines a work, that goes beyond, in the need of, and the search for new plastic horizons. The use of different techniques has led him to develop a parallel universe where, overcoming abstraction, different references to reality, or part of those, co-exists on the same level as invented elements, fully abstract, symbolic or narrative. All in all, a unique and completely personal artistic language, rich and complex, in which he repeatedly represents his constants obsessions and uncertainties, like a mental cartography.

As proof of the importance of his work, are some of the almost countless prizes received during his artistic career. Among them, are well worth mentioning; the renowned “National Prize of Plastic Arts (1981)” and the prestigious “Velázquez Prize of Plastic Arts (2007)”. Also worth mentioning are his appointment as “Doctor Honoris Causa” by the “Faculty of Fine Arts in Cuenca” (2008), The Gold Medal from the “Circulo de Bellas Artes de Madrid (2004)”, “The Aragón-Goya Prize in Painting (2003)”, “The Prize of Plastic Arts from the City of Barcelona (2000)”, The Prize “Tomás Francisco Prieto de la Casa de la Moneda (1999)”, “The Medal of Honor in Achievements in Fine Arts (1996)”, “The Prize CEOE for Plastic Arts (1992)”, “The Andalusian Prize in Plastic Arts (1991)”. He was also rewarded with the order of the “Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres” by the French Ministry of Culture (2008).

His work has been shown individually, on international level in Museums and Art Centers, as well as in Galleries of Contemporary Art in Spain, Germany, Mexico, France, Brazil and USA. Among the innumerable shows is the exhibition Iceberg Tropical at the MNCARS (Madrid, Spain) and at the Kunst Museum (Bonn, Germany), until now the greatest retrospective of his work, accompanied by a magnificent publication which covers a span of his career, personally curated by the artist.

His work can be found in important public collections such as the; “Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (MNCARS)” (Madrid, Spain), “Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao” (Bilbao, Spain), “IVAM” (Valencia, Spain), “Fundación La Caixa” (Barcelona, Spain), “Patio Herreriano” (Valladolid, Spain), “MACBA” (Barcelona, Spain), “ARTIUM” (Vitoria, Spain), “Fundación Juan March” (Madrid, Spain), “Fundación AENA”, “CAAC” (Sevilla, Spain),” Caja Madrid” (Madrid, Spain), “Caja Sol” (Sevilla, Spain), “ICO” (Madrid, Spain), “Museum Folkwang”(Essen, Germany), among others.
