VENUS IN PISCES #2 video installation PLASTIC VEILS photo series, different sizes Author’s text: “Water as a record of human memory”

“The surface of the sea is like a veil that the plastic mimics. Veils protect but they also hide realities”. This is the start of the crushing text about the misuse of plastic that I am exhibiting alongside visual projects. With the sea as the backdrop, an installation and series of photos highlight the current toxicity our seas, another twist of the leitmotif that characterises me: cleanliness as a practice that is hidden from the eyes of a society that discriminates against certain tasks, considering them second rate, and relegating them to more neglected layers.

According to psychoanalysis, that which we most reject ends up becoming the focus of our attention, and this is what happens in these images where plastic takes centre stage, by way of a masquerade, a revision of the religious archetype that arose in Europe regarding water and its protection by virgins that are displayed in chapels dedicated to the sea. They celebrate what they condemn, these futuristic images speak to us about the art of representing the past.

What is even more surprising is the texture obtained by combining extremely small format photos of refugees drowning in our sea, or of animals dying beneath islands of toxic waste that float on the life-giving water and that the media disseminate, thus making them form part of our daily reality, with large format surreal images created using a simple plastic sheet where the light takes on liquid properties. Their chilling beauty refers to the movement of waves that hide one of the most terrible realities of our time: the indiscriminate dumping of toxic waste in the sea.

Inland, we contemplate, the waves reflected and fragmented on the white wall in the room and penetrating inside several buckets which are used to hold toxic waste in rural houses. Their rusting speaks to us of decline and the danger posed by the liquids that are poured into them. Filled with dark liquid, they become mirrors of sea waves and sun, fragmenting into a thousand dancing stars. This is a death song to the poisonous liquids that float on the sea surface, concealing us and hypnotising us, when faced with a reality that we prefer to ignore. ©Eulalia Valldosera, 2016
